Granada, Spain

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

From Ubeda to Granada

Ever since I heard it in school ages ago, Longfellow's wonderfully poignant poem A Dutch Picture has stuck with me:

Simon Danz has come home again,   From cruising about with his buccaneers; He has singed the beard of the King of Spain, And carried away the Dean of Jaen   And sold him in Algiers. ...

(Danz finds himself haunted by the sea and finally: "So he thinks he shall take to the sea again   For one more cruise with his buccaneers...")
